effect of volatile fatty acids in production of polyhydroxyalkanoates by activated sludge

چکیده
polyhydroxyalkanoates (phas) is known to be temporarily stored by microorganisms in activated sludge, especially in the anaerobic-aerobic processes. the main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of fatty acids (vfas) compounds coexistence in substrate of sbr on phas productivity of activated sludge. it has been found that addition of different concentrations of vfas results in an increase of phas content of activated sludge in the range of 90-130% as compared to the one acclimatized with only sucrose as a carbon source. in this study the optimum concentrationof acetate and propionate as the sole carbon sources in the phas production reactor was also found to be 30-35 and 15-20 mgc/l.h.gss, respectively. finally, the work was conducted in order to try and control phas composition by applying carbon sources with different acetate to propionate ratios. it has been observed that inclusion of propionate in the carbon sources lowered phas productivity. the produced phas is composed mainly of 3-hydroxy-butyrate and 3-hydroxy-valerate, and when the propionate in the substrate was increased from 0 to 100% the mass ratio of 3hv produced is increased from 6 to 85%.

Effect of process variables on the production of Polyhydroxyalkanoates by activated sludge
Polyhydroxyalkanoates are known to be temporarily stored by microorganisms in activated sludge, especially in anaerobic-aerobic processes. Due to the problems resulted from the disposals of plastic wastes and excess sludge of wastewater treatment plants, the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates by treating activated sludge and determining the effect of process variables were the main issues of t...
متن کاملToward understanding the mechanism of improving the production of volatile fatty acids from activated sludge at pH 10.0.
A well-defined fractionation approach for sludge flocs was applied to a better understanding of the underlying mechanism of improving the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the hydrolysis and acidification processes at pH 10.0. Specifically, sludge flocs were fractionated through centrifugation and ultrasound into four fractions: (1) slime, (2) loosely bound extracellular polymeric sub...
متن کاملEffect of polyhydroxyalkanoates on dark fermentative hydrogen production from waste activated sludge.
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), an intracellular energy and carbon storage polymer, can be accumulated in activated sludge in substantial quantities under wastewater dynamic treatment (i.e., substrate feast-famine) conditions. However, its influence on hydrogen production has never been investigated before. This study therefore evaluated the influences of PHA level and composition in waste activat...
متن کاملA review: factors affecting excess sludge anaerobic digestion for volatile fatty acids production.
This paper presents a review of methods that improve the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) from excess sludge during the anaerobic digestion process. These methods are mainly divided into two approaches. The first approach is located in the pre-treatment methods, which change the properties of the substrates, such as thermal pre-treatment, alkaline pre-treatment, microwave pre-treatment ...
متن کاملThe Utilization of Activated Sludge Polyhydroxyalkanoates for the Production of Biodegradable Plastics
Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems were used for the development of a system and operating procedures for the high production and storage of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) by wastewater treatment (activated sludge) bacterial cultures. The systems were maintained at a nominal hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 hours, and a temperature of 20°C. The solids retention time (SRT) was maintained a...
متن کاملOptimal recovery of targeted Volatile Fatty Acids by municipal cellulosic sludge fermentation
The main objective of wastewater treatment has always been the quality of the final effluent as well as on the efficiency of the treatment process. Nowadays, it was recognized that municipal wastewater has become an attractive source of renewable resources (i.e. cellulose, PHA, phosphorus, nitrogen...) to be efficiently recovered applying the appropriate technologies even in existing wastewater...
